Fetishes Are Obsessions With Certain Things

Do you have or does your partner have a sexual fetish? Foot fetishes are most common and openly discussed fetish, but people’s way of understanding a fetish.  when it becomes an issue has lacked mainstream acceptance of the term.

If your fixation causes you or those around you undue suffering, that’s when your fetish becomes a problem. It would be considered problematic for a husband, for example, if he stopped being sexually attracted to his wife’s body and now finds himself only being aroused by the sight of her shoes.

Fetish – An Idol Of The Mind

erotic fetish or A sexual can be defined as an extreme sexual fixation on to an object or a body part of the person demonstrating it. Fetishes are objects of fixation, and fetishists are those who have them.

Is A Fetish Disorder A Mental Illness?

It’s hard to say when an obsession becomes something that can be diagnosed as a mental illness. Consider the diagnostic criteria for Fetishistic Disorder in the Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)1 and Diagnostic  in order to better understand this question.

In the DSM-5, this disorder is classified as a paraphilic disorder and has three diagnostic criteria

It’s necessary to have had sexual urges directed at a – anti body part or non-living object for at least six months before you can be considered. Fancies, urges, or behaviours must be present for this to be true.

To meet the second requirement, you must have significant distress or be unable to carry on with your daily activities because of fantasies, urges or behaviours.

The third criterion states that the item cannot be cross-dressing clothing or a vibrating stimulation device. Fetishism does not involve dressing in women’s clothing or using a vibrator.

The DSM-5 also includes disorder specifiers, which help you focus in on the specifics of your symptoms. These are a few examples:

To what extent an individual’s arousal is directed toward a particular part of the body, such as their feet or hair. Partialism is another term for this.

The arousal may be to non-living objects like shoes or undergarments, or it may be to living things like food.

Basically, for something to be classified as a disorder, it has to cause you significant distress and also have lasted at least 6 months.

As an alternative, the term “fetish” can make reference to what we imply by this in layman’s terms: having a sexual interest in a particular activities or objects that you find pleasurable but don’t cause any distress to you or anyone else..
